Bama Golf takes lead in Linger Longer Invite

EATONTON, Ga. – The third-ranked Alabama men's golf team sits alone atop the leaderboard at the Linger Longer Invitational after firing a 10-under par 278 in the second round on Monday at the 7,073-yard, par-72 Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Plantation.

The Crimson Tide stands at 14-under par 562 and holds an 11-shot lead over second-place Chattanooga heading into Tuesday's final round. UA is one of only three teams in the 13-team field to be under par as after two rounds.

True freshman Cory Whitsett followed up his career-low round of 64 with a 68 in Monday's second round, including birdies on four of his last seven holes to finish at 12-under par 132 and retain the individual lead in the tournament. The 12-under in relation to par also ties and Alabama record set by Mark Harrell in the 2007 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and Lars Brovold in the 2003 JPNI.

Junior Bud Cauley is five shots back of Whitsett in second place after carding the low round of the day, a 7-under par 65. Cauley's round featured a front-nine eagle as well as four birdies on the back nine that included a closing birdie on the par-5 18th hole.

Sophomore Lee Knox shot an even-par 72, improving by nine shots upon his opening round score, while freshman Trey Mullinax III carded a 1-over par 73 for the Tide after an opening-round 72 and is tied for 15th.

Junior Hunter Hamrick shot a 79 that did not count toward Alabama's second-round score. Hunter Slatton, who is playing as an individual in the tournament, shot a second-round 80.

The final round of the tournament concludes tomorrow. The Crimson Tide are scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. (CDT) and will be paired with Chattanooga and Stanford. Live stats can be found on
