UA Baseball loses 5-1 to UAB

HOOVER, Ala. – The No. 21 ranked Alabama baseball team suffered a 5-1 loss to the UAB Blazers at Regions Park on Tuesday night. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Crimson Tide, which falls to 18-8 overall. UAB, which lost to Alabama 6-3 in Tuscaloosa last week, improved to 14-10 on the season.

UAB reliever Mark McKinley (2-0) got the win after entering the game in the seventh inning for starting pitcher David Hayes. Hayes threw a career-high 6.1 innings, while allowing one run on six hits. UA starter Trey Pilkington (1-1) took the loss after throwing 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

"They had a soft-tossing left hander out there tonight that really gave us problems," UA head coach Mitch Gaspard said.  "I thought we hit a couple balls pretty good early that didn't fall, and in the middle of the game we really didn't do much. Rosecrans had a pretty good night and got us going, and we were able to tie the game, but really needed to put together some better at-bats right there to try to take the lead."

The SEC Player of the Week, Josh Rosecrans continued his hot hitting, posting three of the seven hits for Alabama. Rosecrans had a pair of singles and a double and scored UA's only run. Miller was 1-for-3 and drove in the Tide's only run.

UAB third baseman Patrick Palmeiro was 2-for-4 with a home run for UAB, which had seven hits against the Tide.

The Blazers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. After getting a single to lead off the inning, Jamal Austin stole two bases and scored on an infield out to put the Blazers ahead 1-0.

In the fourth inning, Alabama left fielder Andrew Miller made a diving catch down the line with two outs to prevent another UAB run from scoring.

Rosecrans doubled off the left field wall with one out in the seventh and Miller singled up the middle on the next pitch to plate Rosecrans and tie the game at 1-1. With runners on first and second with one out, a pair of fly outs to left field ended the Crimson Tide seventh.

"They came back with a big inning and Palmeiro popped one pretty good and from there they had the big inning, which was tough to recover from," Gaspard said."

After Alabama evened the score at 1-1 in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Andrew Miller, UAB answered with a four-run seventh inning. Palmeiro homered to left center on a 1-1 pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning, giving the Blazers a 2-1 lead. The home run sparked a four-run inning for UAB, and a 5-1 deficit the Tide could not overcome.

Gaspard added, "Really for us, you have to bounce back tomorrow night. We have an opportunity to get home, get back to our winning ways and get it going offensively."

Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 when the Crimson Tide hosts South Alabama at 6:05 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Taylor Wolfe (1-2, 4.38 ERA) is scheduled to start for Alabama and South Alabama will counter with senior right-hander Carlton Paris (1-1, 5.52 ERA).
