AUBURN, AL - The Auburn football team held its sixth practice of the 2011 spring season with a two-hour workout in full pads Friday morning at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The Tigers have been conducting weekday practices at Hutsell-Rosen Track and the Auburn Soccer Complex, but moved to the stadium due to the track and field team hosting a meet Friday and Saturday. The workout was conducting under sunny skies with cool but comfortable temperatures.
The practice began with special teams drills, before the Tigers moved on to individual and position drills. After more special teams and 7-on-7 drills, the offensive and defensive units worked against each other in the final periods.
The practice was a prelude to Saturday's first full scrimmage in Jordan-Hare Stadium, and following the workout, offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said that the scrimmage will be very simplistic.
"We don't have a lot of the offense in. We're trying to be very basic," said Malzahn. "We're doing a lot of teaching, very similar to the first spring we were here. We have so many new faces out there. We're just trying to perfect the base things, so our scrimmage tomorrow will be limited somewhat with the number of plays and the different plays we run. We're in evaluation mode right now."
Defensive coordinator Ted Roof stated that his group is going through much of the same issues, but he is pleased with the effort being put forth.
"The kids worked hard today. They flew around pretty well," said Roof. "We're starting to install our defense at a pretty rapid pace, but we have to make sure that we're focusing on the level of execution. That has to improve."
Saturday's scrimmage will take place at 10 a.m. CT. The scrimmage is closed to the media and the public.
Auburn's annual spring football game, A-Day, will be held Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Tickets are $5 for general fans and free for AU students with an Auburn Ignited card.
