AUTAUGA COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - Authorities said two people died after a fast-moving fire Friday afternoon.  It happened on County Road 57, in the Poseys Crossroads community.  Neighbors told WSFA 12 News a school bus driver first spotted the fire at around 3:30 p.m.

Word quickly spread and neighbors went to look for the elderly couple until firefighters arrived.  Witnesses then described hearing explosions before flames started shooting out of the home.

Willie James Brown wanted to help but didn't make it in time.

"I just jumped in the truck and took off over here," said Willie James Brown, who knew the victims.  "I wish there was a way I could have helped him, I cared that much for him."

The victims are identified as 93 year-old Leon McCord and his 90 year-old wife, Jessie McCord.

Their pictures hang inside Poseys Crossroads Grocery Store, along with a note about their home.

Leon McCord was a farmer and his family had lived on the property for at least 140 years.  Brown knew the couple well.

"He was such a good fella, that's why I believe he got to live long like he did," Brown said.

The McCords attended the Methodist Protestant Church, right across the road from their property.

"He was a good church-going person I know that, ever since I knew them," Brown said.  "He was always was the head deacon at that church.  Everybody just had a lot of respect for him."

The State Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire.   He said the investigation is being complicated by the extensive damage to the home.
