OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - Opelika police are confirming that one person has died in a shooting on the campus of Southern Union State Community College in Opelika. Two others are wounded and a fourth person was injured by flying glass.
A late model mini-van with shattered windows is sitting in the parking lot in front of the Higginbotham Academic Center on SUSCC's campus. All victims are said to be females, and a domestic violence situation is suspected. The shooter is not in custody at this time, though authorities say they do have a suspect.
A 63-year-old was killed in the shooting. One victim, 94, was airlifted to Columbus Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the neck and back. Another victim, 36, was transported to East Alabama Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the arm. wasn't immediately known which age belong to which victim. The fourth victim, a 4-year-old child, was also taken to EAMC with injuries sustained by flying glass.
SOUTHERN UNION STATEMENT
"The College's Nursing and Paramedic faculty responded immediately to assist those who were injured. We do not believe other students are at risk; however, the campus will remain closed for the evening. Law enforcement officials are on site assessing the situation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Southern Union expects to open tomorrow morning at our normal time. Counselors will be on-hand."
