MONTGOMERY, AL—The Alabama State University tennis teams will take the trip up I-65 to face Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and in-state rival Alabama A&M University on Thursday, April 7th at 1:30 p.m. It will be the third time the two schools will face each other this season.
The ASU (5-10/2-4 SWAC) men are headed to the SWAC Tournament next week and would like to continue to build momentum heading into tournament play.
"The men's team has been playing better here at the end of the season," head coach Bernard Sewell said. "They guys are going into the match expecting to continue their better play and they are expecting to win."
The men have had good fortune against the Bulldogs (1-6/1-5 SWAC) this season, defeating them 6-1 back in February at Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center and then defeating them 5-1 in the SWAC East vs. East matchups.
The Lady Hornets (4-15/2-6) missed out on the SWAC Tournament in a tie-breaker scenario, but are still looking to close the season on a high note.
This is also the third time the women have met on the hard court, with the Lady Bulldogs (5-6/4-4 SWAC) winning the first two meetings. AAMU defeated ASU 5-2 early in the season at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center, and then defeated ASU 4-0 in the SWAC East vs. East matchups.
"This is a return match for us," Sewell said. "We have always played AAMU on a home-and-home basis. The girls are expecting to go up there and win the match and are looking to play well to close the season."
