MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - As the 25th annual Relay for Life begins to kick off the American Cancer Society is asking for your support. Relay for Life is an event to celebrate the lives of those who survived cancer while remembering those who lost their lives to the fight of cancer. And the American Cancer Society says that every dollar helps!
You can help by giving money to an existing team or start a team of your own. Each team consists of about 8-15 people spend 12 hours at the event taking turns walking while honoring and remembering those who fought and are fighting cancer.
The first lap is always taken by the cancer survivors. A tradition for Relay for Life and an emotional time for those attending. This is a way Relay for Life just gives you an idea of how many lives you helped by supporting the event.
Luminary candles can be bought in honor or memory of someone that fought or is fighting cancer and they are displayed around the track. When the candles are lit all the lights are turned off and a moment of silence takes place to remember those lost to cancer. The bags are left burning throughout the night to remind the participants of the importance of their contributions.
