Troy softball plays host to WKU

TROY, AL– The Troy University softball team will be looking to continue their streak, as they have won two of their last three games, against the Lady Toppers of WKU in a pivotal Sun Belt Conference series this weekend at the Troy Softball Complex.

TROY (22-18, 3-7 Sun Belt) is just a half-game back of their opponent this weekend, WKU (21-17, 3-6 Sun Belt); while they are four games back from second-place Florida Atlantic in the Sun Belt Conference thus far this season. The contests with WKU will mark the first of eight consecutive home games for the Trojans, which include two mid-week contests against in-state foes.

The Trojans enter the game off a 10-inning victory over FIU on Saturday, and a 2-0 victory over South Alabama (both on the road) on Wednesday afternoon. The games this weekend will mark the first weekend games at the Troy Softball Complex since hosting ULM on March 19 and 20 – the opening of conference play.

Game Day Storylines: The Trojans are 7-2 all-time against the Lady Toppers of WKU at the Troy Softball Complex in their history; they also lead the all-time series 13-6. The Lady Toppers swept TROY last season in Bowling Green, winning the games by scores of 2-1, 6-2 and 2-0. Those losses snapped a seven-game winning streak in the series by the Trojans which dated back to the 2007 season. TROY head coach Melanie Davis is just four wins away from 700 for her time her at Troy University, as she has recorded a 696-405-2 record during that time; she is also six victories away from 800 for her career. Junior Nikki Hollett connected on her league-leading 17th home run against South Alabama on Wednesday, giving her 30 for her career and leaving her eight short of Heidi Johnson for second on the all-time list at the school. The Trojans have won two out of their last three games in conference play as they enter the weekend series with WKU. The last time the Trojans played WKU at the Troy Softball Complex, they walked away with a sweep by scores of 2-1, 2-1, and 2-0 (2009). TROY senior Ashlyn Williams struck out 13 batters against South Alabama in a complete-game victory her last time out.

Scouting the Opponent: The Lady Toppers went 2-3 over the week, improving their Sun Belt record to 3-6, now 20-16 overall. WKU clinched the series win over North Texas Saturday afternoon, with 5-3 and 2-1 victories. Junior Amanda Walden drilled her fifth home run of the season Sunday afternoon, now leading the team in home runs. Sophomore Karavin Dew hit two triples Sunday afternoon against North Texas; she now has four triples on the season, tying last season's leader in triples. WKU tallied 21 runs off 38 hits with three doubles, three triples and five home runs on the week. Freshman Kelsie Mattox had five runs off seven hits with one double and one home run for two RBI, totaling 11 bases on the week. Sophomore pitcher Kim Wagner struck out nine Mean Green batters Saturday afternoon in seven innings, tying her season-high strikeouts. The Lady Toppers split their mid-week series with Samford earlier this week as they dropped the first game by a pair, before run-ruling Samford in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
