TUSCALOOSA, AL – The Alabama women's track and field team continues the outdoor season this weekend as it travels to Athens, Ga. to compete in the Spec Towns National Team Invitational.
The meet, hosted by the University of Georgia, will feature teams from South Carolina, Vanderbilt, USC, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Virginia as well as other schools from across the nation.
"I told the team what I'm looking for this weekend is to keep moving forward by getting personal bests and seasonal bests," UA head coach Sandy Fowler said. "Those that haven't gotten seasonal bests yet need to step up. That being said, I think we'll do great in the triple jump with Kia [Wansley] and Chloe [Hetherton] coming off personal bests. I think we'll also do great in the shot put and hammer throw. We had a lot of personal and seasonal bests in all our events last weekend and we need to build on that this weekend."
The Tide is coming off a strong showing at last weekend's Tiger Track Classic, where they recorded more than 20 top-10 finishes. Kia Wansley had one of the Crimson Tide's top performances as she posted the ninth-best jump in the nation in the triple jump with a mark of 41-03.75 for fourth place.
"I think the young ladies are ready to step it up again because that's how you get better and that's how the program gets better. There's going to be a lot of competition in the sprints in particular. The key is to get out there and be competitive and get the job done."
Competition will begin Friday April 7, 2011 at 1 p.m. CDT with the women's triple jump. The shot put and hammer throw competition will also be held Friday afternoon. The meet will continue Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. CDT with the women's 1,500m.
