Summer hours announced for MPS system

MONTGOMERY, AL „Ÿ The Montgomery Public School system announced changes to its operating hours for the summer months of 2011. Beginning May 30 the system will move to a four-day work week with each day being 9.5 hours long. The change will apply to the Central Office and schools.

"In addition to saving money by reducing utility and fuel costs, parents and community members who work will have an opportunity to take care of school business without having to take off," said Superintended Barbara Thompson. "Employees will work the same number of hours each week, we save on very scarce resources, and the public can do business more easily during the extended hours. We also felt our employees were more productive having longer hours to work on projects without interruption. It is a win-win."

The central office and satellites (who serve the public), and schools will be open from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. during the weeks of May 31 – August 12, Monday – Thursday - with the exception of two holiday weeks. Transportation and Operations departments are expected to follow traditional M-F schedules due to the nature of their work.

Parents and community members should call schools before visiting during the summer months. Schools are scheduled to be open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 – 5:30, except for the holiday weeks. However, some schools have few staff members during the summer, and vacations and training could mean that a school is closed during scheduled hours.
