Auburn University at Montgomery senior Josh Smith tossed six effective innings and the offense blew open a close game with seven runs in the third inning, as the Senators defeated Thomas University, 11-3, on Tuesday.
With the win, the Senators improved to 33-15 on the season, while Thomas fell to 17-21 overall.
Smith improved to 4-1 on the year, as he allowed just three runs and six hits over the first six innings. Juniors Nathan Brown, Forest Holifield and Tyler Dent all tossed a scoreless inning of relief to complete the victory.
At the plate, junior Hunter Cross paced the team, collecting three hits, including a double, scoring three runs and driving in two more. Senior Charlie Lester finished with three runs batted in and a run scored, while adding two hits. Senior Sam Judah and junior Brian Wheeler each chipped in a pair of hits and a RBI.
Hugh Lee led the Night Hawks with two hits, while Skyler Sopotnick took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the season.
AUM will return to action on Friday, April 15, when it travels to Mobile, Ala., for the opening game of a three-game Southern States Athletic Conference series against the University of Mobile. First pitch of the opener is slated for 2 p.m.
