The 51st-ranked Alabama men's tennis team (10-11, 2-9 SEC) will face No. 33 LSU (10-12, 5-6 SEC) in the first round at the 2011 Southeastern Conference Championship on Thursday, April 21, in Gainesville, Fla. The 10th-seeded Crimson Tide and No. 7 seed Tigers are scheduled to begin play at 11 a.m. CT.
"We had a very good match with LSU two weeks ago," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "I know our guys felt that was one they let slip away, so they are eager for a rematch. We will need to play well and get off to a good start early."
Alabama enters tournament play having split its final two matches of the season with a 4-3 win at home against UAB and a 4-0 loss at No. 18 Auburn. For the second straight year, the Tide will face LSU in the first round of the SEC tournament.
In its last outing against the Tigers, Alabama fell 5-2 in a hard fought match in Baton Rouge. LSU edged out the Tide in doubles and claimed wins in four of the six singles matches, three of which were decided in three sets.
The Tigers enter postseason play having won one of their last three matches of the regular season. LSU had back-to-back road losses at No. 33 Vanderbilt, 7-0, and at No. 12 Kentucky, 6-1. The Tigers wrapped up play with a 6-1 win at home over Arkansas last time out.
The winner of the Alabama/LSU match will face off against No. 5 Georgia, the tournament's No. 2 seed. That match will be played at 11 a.m. CT on Friday, April 22.
