The Troy University softball team gave up three unearned runs in falling to in-state foe UAB, 4-2, at the Troy Softball Complex in the last non-conference game of the season for the Trojans.
Kelly Luquette led TROY (27-21) as she went 1-for-3 from the plate, hitting her second home run of the season and first since the second game of the season against Alabama A&M. The Trojans were held to just three hits by UAB starter Leigh Streetman (11-5).
UAB jumped on top early as they scored the game's first run in the third inning off TROY starter Ashlyn Williams. Caley Walden connected on a one-out single, then got into scoring position by stealing second. She later scored on a Kayla Orr single through the left side to give the Blazers a 1-0 advantage.
However, the lead did not last long as the Trojans used a two-out home run by Luquette to even the score. The freshman took a 2-1 pitch from Streetman and drove it just over the fence in left to even the contest.
The Blazers took the lead for good in the fourth when they scored the first of three unearned runs off TROY reliever Morgan Grove (8-6). They added another pair of runs in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1 at the time.
TROY mounted a comeback in the sixth as Taylor Smartt reached on a fielding error by the Blazers. The next batter for the Trojans, Nikki Hollett, drove the third pitch into left for a double to score pinch runner Ashley Adkins. With Hollett at third, Streetman was able to get out of the jam for UAB by stranding the junior.
Williams went 3 1/3 for the Trojans in the start, allowing just one run off of three hits. She struck out four in a pre-determined role. Grove suffered the loss, going 3 2/3 and allowing three unearned runs off of five hits.
The Trojans return to action in Sun Belt Conference play, traveling to Middle Tennessee to play a Friday-Saturday series due to Easter. The games on Friday begin at 1 pm, with the final game of the series starting at 1 pm on Saturday.
