Bama player named to Capital One Academic All-American baseball team

Alabama senior relief pitcher Brett Whitaker was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. Whitaker, a native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.87 in human performance/exercise science.

Primarily a relief pitcher for the Crimson Tide, Whitaker has appeared in 16 games this season. He is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched, and has recorded 17 strikeouts. Additionally, Whitaker is used on the offensive side and was instrumental in the Tide's 5-4 win in game one of its recent series at Mississippi State. Whitaker hit a game-winning, pinch-hit home run, his first of the season, to lead off the 10th inning against the Bulldogs.

The Alabama baseball team will play a three-game Southeastern Conference series against the LSU Tigers, Friday-Sunday, May 6-8. First pitch for the series is slated for 6:35 p.m. on Friday from Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
