The Alabama State Softball team fell to Southern University 11-6 Thursday in first round action of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament. Both teams opened the morning's slate of games from the Shea Brothers Softball Complex just outside of Birmingham.
Meagan Dixon put ASU on the board first with a lead-off homerun to open the game. The solo shot marked Dixon's eighth homer of the season. SU tied the game at 1-1 when, Audrey Phillips scored on an ASU error in the bottom of the first inning.
In the bottom half of the second inning, the Lady Jaguars scored three runs with two outs taking the lead 4-1. The Lady Hornets quickly responded in the top of the third when Whitley Golson stole home and Dixon drilled an RBI single to center that scored Brehanna Rodgrigues trimming Southern's lead 4-3.
Errors pushed the Lady Jags lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the third when ASU committed three errors that directly resulted in SU scoring four more runs. In the top of the fourth inning, the Lady Hornets scored three runs each time with the bases loaded on three different at bats making the score 8-6.
With Southern leading 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Jaguars put the game away when Shaban Brown hit a two-run homer that extending the lead back to five runs.
Golson and Dixon had the biggest bats on the day for the Lady Hornets. Golson was 3-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Dixon was 2-2 with a homerun and three RBI.
Alabama State will face the loser of the Grambling and Mississippi Valley State game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
