The season has ended for the baseball team at Talladega College; however, the Tornadoes have made great strides this year. The TC Tornadoes were ranked No. 1 this week in the Black College Baseball Poll. TC ranks ahead of Winston-Salem State, Saint Augustine's and Stillman College. The Tornadoes are 3rd in the nation in the USCAA ranks and 3rd in the NAIA conference. This is the 1st winning season for the Tornadoes in 3 years. The Tornadoes also had the opportunity to play in the Association of Independent Institutions Tournament in Thomasville, Georgia this week.
"This has been a fun year. We've been successful on the field and that's due to the great attitudes of these players. They're respectful and they have good grades. All of this translates to the field. We've got a great group of young men," proudly states Wilberto Ramos, head baseball coach and TC Athletic Director. Talladega College has recruited for the team from as far west as California all the way to South America and the Caribbean. The team members currently hail from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and California. Coach Ramos says, "We've got a mix of Latin, White, and Black players. It's fun to see them bond throughout the year. Baseball teaches them how to interact with each other and that will go with them into the workforce. We use baseball as a tool to reach and educate these students; and these lessons help them in baseball and in life. They're prepared to deal with other people." Talladega College is setting new trails with its program and other schools are calling on Coach Ramos and asking him how they can replicate what he's doing at their own schools. "The College is doing a great job on expanding and enriching these student athletes," states Ramos.
The ending stats for the team are 30 wins and 20 losses. "This is overall the best season and record in Talladega College baseball history. It's been a good and exciting year for them, remarks Sports Information Director, Demond Walker. Talladega College President Billy C. Hawkins states, "This Baseball team has had a great season. No where will you find a team in its third season with 30 wins. Coach Ramos has done a great job with this young team. His stellar leadership is quite evident. I am proud of the Coach and team."
Last Saturday, during the Annual Alumni Reunion & Commencement Weekend activities, Talladega College honored graduating baseball seniors: Jesse Sharbutt, Jose Sosa and Richard Cochran. That day, the team garnered their 30th win at home against Tennessee Temple.
