Prattville City Employees Get Fewer Holidays

City employees in Prattville won't get as many days off next year. The number of holidays was reduced Wednesday from 13 to 9. The city council agreed to the changes as a cost-cutting measure.

Council members say the city will save $200,000 a year since police, firefighters, and other employees who normally work on holidays, won't have to paid overtime or holiday pay.

The nine holidays that remain are as follows:

  1. New Year's Day
  2. Martin Luther King's/Robert E. Lee's Birthday
  3. Memorial Day
  4. Independence Day
  5. Labor Day
  6. Veterans' Day
  7. Thanksgiving
  8. Christmas
  9. One floating day to be approved by department head

Prattville city councilors also passed the city's $19 million general operating fund budget Wednesday. That's about $400,000 higher than last year. It does not include capital costs. Those expenditures are expected to be approved in the coming weeks.
