A two vehicle accident this morning at the intersection of South Decatur Street and East South Street resulted in one traffic fatality.
The investigation indicates a 2002 Kia Sportage, driven by 34-year-old Melissa James of Montgomery, was traveling southbound on South Decatur Street in the far right lane and a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by 32-year-old Jimmy K. Ellis of Montgomery, was traveling westbound on East south Street in the middle lane.
A total of four passengers were in the Chevrolet Suburban. A rear juvenile passenger received minor injuries and was transported to Jackson Hospital's emergency room. The driver and two other passengers received no injuries.
Three passengers were traveling in the Kia Sportage. A rear juvenile was ejected from the vehicle, but received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Baptist Medical Center South by ambulance. The front passenger, 36-year-old Michael D. Williams, Sr. was entrapped in the vehicle and freed by the Montgomery Fire Department. He was transported by ambulance to Baptist Medical Center South where he later died from his injuries.
This will be the sixth traffic fatality for 2011.
