COWARTS, AL (WSFA) - A routine Drivers License Checkpoint in Cowarts, Ala. turned dangerous this afternoon when a man panicked, ran over a Sheriff's Deputy, and deputies returned fire.

According to Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes, both the deputy and the suspect are in the hospital after this afternoon's incident.

Hughes told WSFA 12 News Wiregrass Reporter Hannah Lane that the suspect in question knew about warrants out for his arrest, and he attempted to speed through the checkpoint to avoid capture. In doing so the suspect purposely stuck a Houston County Sheriff's Deputy with his vehicle. The man then attempted to flee again, aiming his vehicle at yet another deputy, that deputy fired on the suspect, striking and injuring him.

The suspect was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The deputy is also in the hospital receiving treatment for minor injuries.

Sheriff Hughes said the department does plan on pressing attempted murder charges against the suspect.

ABI is currently investigating as this was an officer involved shooting.
