ASU baseball to open SWAC tournament

The Alabama State Baseball team will look to claim a SWAC title as they head to Shreveport, La., to participate in the 2011 SWAC Tournament beginning Wednesday, May 18 at Fairgrounds Field.

Alabama State (14-27, 6-18) claimed the No. 4 seed in the eastern division in the tournament for the second consecutive season.  The Hornets will face the Western Division No. 1 seed Southern (26-20, 16-8) at 6 p.m.  The SWAC tournament is scheduled from May 18-22, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

"We are once again excited about having the opportunity to play in the SWAC tournament", said head coach Larry Watkins.

The Hornet's last game was a 7-5 defeat at SEC opponent Auburn last Wednesday night.

"Our last contest was good for us to play, even though we came up short," said Watkins.  "It mentally prepares us for the tournament this week and keeps us focused on the task ahead."

Junior centerfielder Jordan Mims leads the team with a .336 batting average, and freshman leftfielder Andrew Pitts is next with a .333 clip.  Pitts also paces the Hornets with three home runs, while Darrion Pedro leads the club with 31 RBI's and 13 stolen bases.

The double-elimination tournament concludes on Sunday with championship game at 1 p.m.  The championship game will be tape delayed and the broadcast will air on ESPNU on Monday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m.
