Barbour County School Closing

BARBOUR CO., AL (WSFA) - At the end of the school year, Barbour County school Dixie Academy will close for good.  Junior Blake Richards says the last days at the school are an, "emotional battle."  Dixie is the only school he has ever attended.

The school's population has dwindled over the years. The freshman class has only six students.  With a small class, you can imagine they've all become very close.  One student told WSFA 12 News, "We don't want to leave, but I guess we have to."

Headmaster Jimmy Partin says the decision to close wasn't easy.  He added a school is like any other business, without customers it can't survive.  "We can't keep operating like this," said Partin.

Dixie first opened in 1967.  That year it graduated six seniors - the same number that will get their diplomas this year.
