Alabama to host Georgetown in Big East/SEC Challenge

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama men's basketball team will host Georgetown in the 2011 Big East/SEC Challenge on December 1, the Southeastern Conference and ESPN announced Thursday.

"We are excited to be a part of this great event that features two of the top basketball conferences in the nation," UA head coach Anthony Grant said. "The opportunity to host a program with the tradition and reputation of Georgetown is one that our team is looking forward to and I know our fans are as well."

The 2011 Big East/SEC Challenge includes all 12 SEC programs and 12 of the 16 Big East programs playing each other over a three-day period. UA is one of six SEC schools that will host a Big East foe. Last season, the SEC earned a 3-1 record in the then eight-team event. All 12 games in 2011 will be televised by the ESPN family of networks. Times and networks of the games will be decided at a later date.

The Crimson Tide and Hoyas have met four times on the hardwood and split those meetings. The most recent engagement came in the 2007 Big East/SEC Challenge when Georgetown earned a 70-60 victory in Birmingham, Ala.

The Hoyas will travel to Tuscaloosa after posting a 21-11 record last year and advancing to the NCAA Tournament before falling to VCU. Alabama returns seven players from last season's team that won 25 games and advanced to the National Invitation Tournament championship game.
