MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
The class sings a song called "Grateful". It's a fitting song as the prepare to say goodbye to a teacher who's been in the classroom for 40 years. Mrs. Joyce Trussell loves her students, and loves teaching music, but she says it's time to move on. "I'm going to miss this place," Trussell said. "Teaching is a wonderful career, it has its rewards and I've been blessed."
During the last 4 decades she's seen a lot of little singing faces. A former student from the late 70's nominated her for the Class Act Award. "She treated everyone special and her disposition in the classroom is the same as it was 34-35 years ago," said former student Barry Dean.
So what kept her in the classroom for 4 decades? "I love what I do. The children are special, and I believe in them, because they are our future." The future at Dalraida Elementary School will be different without Mrs. Trussell, but I'm guessing they'll probably see her around. She says she plans to fill in when they need a substitute.
