OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - Commuters on Interstate 85 near Auburn are well of aware of the delays Wednesday morning and afternoon. Two 18-wheelers were involved in a wreck that has slowed traffic for hours.
As of 4:45pm the northbound lanes were still heavily backed up. Southbound lanes are free flowing.
The crash happened around 8am Wednesday near Exit 58 close to the Tiger Town exit in Opelika. The scene still has not been fully cleared.
Video provided by a motorist showed the 18-wheelers, heavily damaged, sitting on opposite sides of the interstate, divided by an overpass.
WSFA 12 News' news partner WTVM reports that a load on one of the 18-wheelers shifted and that caused the truck to roll onto its side. The wreck sent debris from the trailer everywhere onto the interstate.
The second 18-wheeler struck the debris, lost control, slammed into a guardrail and veered into the oncoming northbound lanes of traffic. Thankfully, there were no other collisions. The tractor trailer came to rest in the ditch along the interstate.
Both 18-wheeler drivers are expected to be ok.
