MONROE, OH (FOX19) -
Construction has started on a giant Jesus statue that will replace one destroyed by lightning a year ago.
Work began Wednesday at the Solid Rock rock church on the 51-foot-tall statue of a full-standing Jesus with outstretched arms. It replaces a chest-up depiction that was nicknamed "Touchdown Jesus" due to way the arms were outstretched.
The church hired local sculptor Tom Tsuchiya and the company Glass Hand LLC to design and build the sculpture. The church is calling the statue "Come Unto Me." Designers say it was inspired by Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.
Designers say the statue will take more than six months to complete.
The statue will have a steel substructure and a lightning suppression system. It will be finished with a top coat of acrylic-based aggregate to resemble limestone.
