If your commute includes I-85 in the mornings I'm sure you've noticed men alongside the roadways picking up trash and road debris and thought to yourself "who would want to do that?"

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Hello summertime…

The 2010-2011 school term has come to an end, and now is the ideal time to help our children prepare for their 2011-2012 school year.

You may ask how do we do this. Simply encourage children to read one or two books during the summer, teach them their ABCs, play spelling games when driving down the street.

In other words view every outing to the mall or grocery store as a learning opportunity for a child and a TEACHABLE MOMENT for us adults.

When eating out, while waiting for your food to be served, play a spelling or counting game.

When your change is returned to you after paying for your food or groceries, have your children count that back to you while waiting.

Begin and end each day saying, "Good morning and good night" to your family.

This teaches children the importance of maintaining certain family values that won't change as they become adults and have families of their own.

As often as possible, let's turn every opportunity into a TEACHABLE MOMENT.
