Montgomery teen drowned in Coosa River

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Wetumpka Mayor Jerry Willis told WSFA 12 News a 17-year-old male from Montgomery drowned in the Coosa River.
The teen was swimming in the river when he went under for about 20 minutes.  He was retrieved from the by rescue divers and transported to the Elmore County Hospital and pronounced dead due to drowning.
It happened on the west side of the river near the new state boat ramp near Dozier Street. 
Police have identified the teen although they have not released his name. Some of the teens family has been contacted.
No further information is being released at this time.
