Clarion Hotel closed, future of building uncertain

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The 170 room Clarion Hotel in Downtown Montgomery has closed down.  At the same time, economic development officials are hopeful another hotel may come downtown soon.

But what happens next for the Clarion - formally the Madison Hotel - is an open question. Signs on the marquee and the door say the building is available for sale or lease.  WSFA 12 News contacted the person who owns the title for the building, but we have not received a response.

"We haven't heard exactly what they're going to do just yet, but we are very hopeful that someone will take the property," said Dawn Hathcock, Vice-President of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitor's Bureau.    It's a great location for downtown with the new sports facility nearby."

Hathcock said with that new Sportsplex and the Convention Center, there is a definite need for more hotel rooms downtown.  She said a hotel company has interest in the Downtown area, but would not say the potential location or the franchise.  She did say the company is interested in constructing its own building.

Those who work downtown said they would welcome the new property.

"It would be a good thing.  It would bring more people to the Montgomery area, particularly the downtown area, which we need," said Wesley Hodges, who is a trainer with River Region CrossFit.

Hathcock said officials should have a better idea if the new hotel is coming to town in the next couple of months.
