Birmingham Hwy. may stay closed over night due to thick smoke

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The city of Montgomery says a portion of the Birmingham Highway (Highway 31) near the River Bridge may stay closed over night due to dangerous road conditions sparked by a large fire in north Montgomery.

City spokeswoman Martha Earnhardt says commuters should avoid the area between Hunter Loop Road and the River Bridge, instead using Interstate 65.

The stretch of road was closed Friday afternoon due to a large fire and heavy smoke in the area of Washington Ferry Road that obscured vision and made travel hazardous.

The Montgomery Fire Department is working to bring the fire under control, but anticipates that it may continue to smolder throughout the night..

Traffic in the area is heavily congested and is estimated to be backed up nearly 5 miles.
