Montgomery going after $2 million in back taxes

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The city of Montgomery is preparing to go after nearly $2 million in delinquent tax money it's owed by local businesses.

The exact figure is $1,931,000.

In the next few days letters will go out to approximately 1,000 businesses that are behind on their taxes, and those businesses will get a "grace period" to bring their balance current. That time runs out on August 1, 2011.

After that date the city will file court papers for violations.

A conviction can result in a fine of up to $500 and jail time up to 6 months.

Arrangements may be made to pay or arrange to pay prior to August 1, 2011 through the license division of the Department of Finance. They are located at 25 Washington and the office number to call is 334-625-2036.
