AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

Details surrounding a standoff in the city of Auburn are coming to light even as officers search for the man who was supposed to be barricaded inside a house that was empty.

Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson said the events that led to Wednesday afternoon's standoff on East Magnolia actually started around 2am.

A man, whom authorities would not identify beyond confirmation that he was not an Auburn University student, was involved in a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend in the early morning hours and made what police described as credible threats.

The man both said the threats and wrote them.

The ex-girlfriend was able to get out of the situation and is said to be in a safe location.

Police set up surveillance on the apartment. which lasted most of the day.

SWAT officers were called in late in the afternoon and made a move to enter the residence before darkness fell. The officers searched the residence and reported that it was empty.

Police are still searching for the man but are not releasing any other details at the time.

The suspect is not considered a danger to the public.

Investigators say they will release the man's identity to the media Thursday if he is not taken into custody overnight.
