WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) - An 18-wheeler carrying a 45,000 pound load of fertilizer overturned and crashed Friday afternoon along U.S. Highway 231 at Highway 9 in Wetumpka.
The driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Officials on the scene closed the southbound lanes of Hwy 231 so they could remove the crashed vehicle. Traffic was expected to remain congested for the short term.
The Alabama Department of Transportation hauled in a load of sand to contain any oil, which could react with fertilizer. The fertilizer was contained and did not mix with the oil. No issues are expected from contamination.
Wetumpka police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
