OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) investigation at the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center has concluded.
The ADPH identified seventeen children and two adults who either played in the Splash Park or swam in the pool at the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center between June 4 and June 22 who experienced severe gastrointestinal illness.
The common source of exposure for all nineteen was the Aquatic Center. Of the nineteen patients with gastrointestinal illness; 6 had positive cultures for E. coli O157:H7.
No additional cases have been identified following the closure of the pools and decontamination based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) recommendations to prevent Recreational Water Illnesses (RWIs).
