A longtime Ozark City Council member has died.

Ozark Mayor Billy Blackwell says 69-year-old Joe Outlaw died Saturday at Flowers Hospital in Dothan after falling ill at his house at Lake Eufaula. Blackwell said Outlaw died from a heart attack.

Outlaw had served on the city council since his appointment in 1993. The mayor said Outlaw had recently sold the heating and air-conditioning business he'd run for more than 35 years.

Blackwell said Outlaw was "a real people person" who did favors for community members without expecting anything in return. Blackwell said Outlaw had heart problems in the past.

The funeral is Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Westview Heights United Methodist Church.
