Greenetrack fights $75M tax bill from state

Greenetrack is fighting a $75 million tax bill from the state and says in court papers the assessment far exceeds the track's assets.

Greenetrack has filed court papers in Greene County Circuit Court appealing the Alabama Revenue Department's attempt to collect $61.8 million in taxes and $13.7 million in interest for sales taxes not paid on electronic bingo proceeds from 2004 through 2008.

The track contends that state law prohibits levying sales tax on the machines' gross receipts.

Court papers filed by the track's accountant say its assets are about one-fifth of the tax bill. The track contends state law doesn't allow sales taxes to be collected on the machines' gross receipts.

Circuit Judge Eddie Hardaway has scheduled a status conference with attorneys on Aug. 25.
