Salad Chef - "Does it Work?"

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) – Are you looking for a way cut down the time it takes to chop up your salad?  If so, the answer may be the Salad Chef, a new product designed to turn salad making into a low effort task.  You can chop, dice, shred, and store; but that is if it works.

Our test brings us to the kitchen of the culinary arts program at Trenholm State Technical College in downtown Montgomery.  Karla Hall, a third semester student, helps us with our test.  She has looked over our Salad Chef and is ready to test.  We use a bowl full of colorful fruits and veggies, washed and prepped to fit within the blades of the unit.  Our first item is a potato!

"We've got the smallest blade in here that comes with it.  So we're going to go ahead and give that a shot and see how well that works," explains Karla.

She applies direct pressure with both hands to start cutting, but a final push is needed to get the entire potato through the blades.

Swapping blades, we cut up some onions with ease, chop a cored apple, and swap again to grate some carrot.

"A little messy.  Not too bad," says Karla about the grating attachment.

So far, we are problem free.  With enough forearm strength, Karla is able to chop each item completely.  So it's time to make a salad and we get choppin'!

Karla begins with Iceberg lettuce saying, "Notice it does crush down a little bit.  That worked out a little bit better."

With some maneuvering of the lettuce, we're off to a solid start.  She adds some quartered cabbage which slices nicely as well.  Then, when she tries the red and green peppers as well as the tomato, she struggles getting the ends through.

"You do have to add a little bit of pressure on that to get that to cut through when you get right there at the end," explains Karla.

Romaine lettuce proves troublesome because the lettuce leafs are so large and airy.  However, this struggle is not enough to stop her.  She adds some radish and carrot to top it off.  We seal it with the provided lid and it's ready to shake and eat, or to hit the fridge for storing.  The Salad Chef is dishwasher safe, so cleaning it should be easy too.

Karla expresses her feeling from the test, "I think overall it's a good product, I would be glad to use it at home." 

Keep in mind, additional attachments can be ordered for the Salad Chef that allow for slicing and spinning.  Our tests yield fresh salad in a flash, so the salad chef tosses to a YES for this week's "Does it Work?" test.

We purchased our 7-piece Salad Chef at a local business for nearly $40.
