I-85 slowly reopened hours after fatal, multi-vehicle crash

Interstate 85 north was slowly reopened Wednesday evening following a fatal, multi-vehicle crash that happened hours before.

Just before 9:00pm, I-85 north was reopened, relieving some of the heavily congested traffic that became bottled after all lanes were closed six hours earlier.

Traffic will remain heavily congested for sometime as crews continue to clear the roadway.

Eyewitnesses told WSFA 12 News they saw a tire blowout on one of the vehicles moments before the collisions took place. An SUV apparently swerved to dodge the tire debris and a chain-reaction followed.

The crash included five vehicles - three cars and two 18-wheelers.

One person, unidentified, was killed while a second person was rushed to an area hospital with injuries. Authorities said it would most likely be Thursday before the victims are identified.

All northbound lanes between the Eastern Boulevard and Taylor Road were closed following the wreck.

Alabama State Troopers were called to the scene to assist the Montgomery Police Department in clearing the wreckage. A detour was also put in place to help relieve traffic congestion, but many side roads became heavily clogged as a result.
