Brooke Pancake advances to quarterfinals of U.S. women’s amateur championship

BARRINGTON, R.I.  – Alabama senior-to-be Brooke Pancake defeated Nicole Morales 4 & 3 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2011 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship on Thursday at the Rhode Island Country Club.

The No. 32 seeded Pancake will play No. 40-seed Erynne Lee on Friday in the quarterfinals with a tee time set for 11:45 a.m. (CDT). Lee, who will attend UCLA in the fall, defeated the ninth-seed Annie Park 4 & 2 in the round of 16 to earn the right to face Pancake on Friday.

Pancake's round against Morales featured just two birdies, one bogey and 12 pars. A Morales bogey on the 15th hole ended the match.

Alabama's Jennifer Kirby, a U.S. Amateur semifinalist a year ago, lost in the first round of match play to Amy Meier while sophomore-to-be Hannah Collier just missed the match-play cut.

A Pancake win on Friday would reserve her a spot in the semifinals against either Demi Frances Runas or Danielle Kang, who knocked Kirby out of the U.S. Am a year ago.
