Newspaper: many at UA paid more than $100,000

The Tuscaloosa News says 393 administrators and professors at the University of Alabama earn more than $100,000 a year apiece.

The newspaper reports ( ) that leading the list outside the athletics department is President Robert E. Witt, who earns a base salary of $487,620.

The newspaper obtained the payroll information through an open records request. It shows that among 3,890 employees in academic, administrative, recreation and support roles the average annual paycheck is $55,527 for the current fiscal year.

Total payroll for the university is $216 million, accounting for a third of UA's operating budget of $654 million.

UA's vice presidents each earn more than $200,000. Lynda Gilbert, vice president for financial affairs, makes $346,500, followed by UA Provost Judith Bonner who earns $340,000.
