Fatal crash leads to reckless murder charge

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama State Troopers have charged a man with murder following a fatal automobile crash that happened August 1, 2011.

James Edwin Thomas, Jr., 54, of Montgomery is accused of reckless murder in the death of Jeffery Alonzo Benjamin, 33. State troopers say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The crash happened around 3:15am that Sunday just east of Hobbie Road in Montgomery. Benjamin was killed when the 2008 Chevy van he was driving collided with a 1998 Chevy C1500 pickup driven by Thomas.

Benjamin, whom Troopers say was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Thomas is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility on $25,000 bond.
