VERBENA, AL (WSFA) - One person is dead and three others are injured following a crash along Interstate 65 Saturday. The crash involved three vehicles and occurred around 12:45pm Saturday.
Medics and investigators arrived on the scene at the 199 mile marker just inside the Chilton County line where they worked to save lives and clear the scene.
Santiago Garcia, 48, of Alabaster was killed when the 1998 Ford Explorer he was driving suffered a blowout, overturned several times, crossed the median and collided with two other vehicles traveling southbound. Garcia's wife and sole passenger suffered life-threatening injuries.
The other vehicles involved were a 2009 Dodge Journey and a 2007 Ford U-Haul truck. There were no injuries in the Dodge. Both occupants in the U-Haul suffered serious injuries, according to Alabama State Troopers.
The three individuals with injuries were transported to UAB, one by ambulance and two by helicopter.
The investigation is ongoing and authorities have not released any additional information regarding the collisions.
