ENTERPRISE, AL (WSFA) -

A ten-year-old Enterprise girl was still in surgery as of 4:00pm, hours after being rushed by helicopter to Children's Hospital in Birmingham. She was repeatedly stabbed in the neck.

The Enterprise Police Department and Coffee County DHR went to a residence in the 200 block of Warren Road at 5:58 a.m. in response to a possible child abuse case. There they saw Henry Louis Thompkins leave the residence, covered in blood.

Thompkins was detained at that time and a search of the residence was conducted. Officers discovered that the ten year old girl had been stabbed numerous times in her neck.

The victim was first transported to Medical Center Enterprise but later transferred via helicopter to Children's Hospital in Birmingham. She was in critical condition when she was placed in the chopper. Investigators say hours later she was still on the operating room table.

Henry Louis Thompkins, age 44 of Enterprise, is now charged with Attempted Murder. Other charges are pending. Investigators say while Thompkins lived at the girl's home, he is not related to her.

No personal information is being released regarding the victim due to her age.
