Tuscaloosa police believe University of Alabama student James Harry Johnson died from a bullet shot by 20-year-old Ricky Crooks, who was charged in a shooting that occured near the apartments where Johnson was struck.

Crooks was charged on Sept. 11 for shooting at an individual from his vehicle toward the Buddy's Food Mart at the intersection of Hargrove Road and 10th Avenue. The shooting occurred around the same time that 25-year-old James Harry Johnson was shot as he walked from his vehicle to a friend's apartment at Sterling Crimson Apartments, a little after 2 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

Based on the amount of evidence in the case, including physical evidence, witness testimonies, audio and video surveillance recordings, Tuscaloosa homicide investigators obtained a warrant today for the arrest of Ricky Crooks, charging him with capital murder of Johnson.

"Investigators now have probable cause to believe that one of the shots fired by Crooks during the incident at the intersection of Hargrove and 10th Avenue is the bullet that caused Johnson's death," Captain Loyd Baker with the TPD said.

Crooks was arrested Friday, Sept. 16 at his residence on Mink Slide Road in Tuscaloosa around 1 p.m.
