Well-known Montgomery businessman passes away

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A well-known Montgomery County businessman and developer has passed away following a short illness.

Ed Welch, 78, served as Chairman of the investment firm Welch Hornsby & Welch and was President of Colonial BancGroup. He was also a co-founder of The Waters.

Mr. Welch was also very active in the community, serving on several boards including the Montgomery YMCA, Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Faulkner University.

Welch was a 1955 graduate of the University of Alabama where he was an All SEC baseball player. After graduating, he served a tour of duty in the United States Air Force.

The lifelong Montgomery resident was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jean Sylvest Welch.  He's survived by children Wendy Welch Plunkett (Grover), Jenny Welch Walker (Dale), and Edward V. Welch Jr. (Kathy). 

His grandchildren: Tyler Walker (Paula), Mary Fran Plunkett, Jacob Walker (Macy), Edward Welch III "Trace", Cameron Walker, Rebecca Plunkett, Kelsey Welch, and Laura Plunkett. 

His great grandchildren: Avery Jean Walker and Hartley Walker. 

Visitation will be held Friday, September 23, 2011 from 5-7 p.m. at GracePointe Church in Montgomery where he served for more than 30 years as an Elder.

Funeral service will be held the following day at 10 a.m., also at GracePointe Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
