Dan Atkinson to retire after 40 years in broadcasting

Dan says goodbye. Dan says goodbye.

For the second time in his career, meteorologist Dan Atkinson is saying goodbye to the folks here at WSFA 12 News. We're certainly going to miss him all over again.

The first time he said goodbye was May 26, 1982 after serving 8 years as weeknight meteorologist and as co-host of "PM Magazine" and the popular children's program "Young World".

Dan headed back to Atlanta where he continued the career he loved. But, but luckily for us, he eventually found his way back to 12 East Delano Avenue some years later in 2006.

The second time around has been no easier on all the employees here. Dan recently announced he's ready to close the book on a broadcasting career that has spanned more than four decades!

WSFA 12 News honored Dan's years of service at a reception Wednesday afternoon and unveiled a mural of him given to all long-time WSFA employees as they retire.

Dan, a native of Kingsland, Georgia (in the extreme southeast corner of that state) is married to wife Cynthia, an Auburn native. They and their two children enjoy traveling, and Dan in particular is fascinated by Civil War history. One of his favorite pastimes is visiting battlefields like Gettysburg.

We're going to miss Dan around the station, but we're so glad he and his family are anchored in Montgomery and will continue to visit on occasion!

Dan's last day on air will be Sunday, October 2.

Please feel free to say congratulations to him on his retirement in the comment section.
