Alabama vehicle owners who were supposed to renew their tags in September now have until Oct. 20 to get it done because of the long lines resulting from Alabama's new immigration law.
The state Revenue Department announced the extension Wednesday and said no late fees or penalties will be levied during the extension. People whose last name begins with a Q, S or T renew their tags in September.
Department officials said the extension also applies to people registering recently purchased vehicles.
Alabama's new immigration law requires motorists renewing a tag to have the Alabama driver's license number and license expiration date for each owner. That applies when a husband and wife own a vehicle jointly.
Tags lines have been so long in Birmingham that officials are adding portable toilets.
