MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Governor Robert Bentley is ordering all flags on state government buildings lowered to half-staff in memory of the late Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth.
Shuttlesworth, a Civil Rights icon, passed away at the age of 89 Wednesday near Birmingham.
Rev. Shuttlesworth was instrumental in the Birmingham integration efforts in the 1950's and 1960's that helped spark the national civil rights movement.
"I was saddened to hear of the passing of Fred Shuttleworth this morning," Governor Bentley said. "He was a true pioneer for civil rights and a champion for equality among all Alabamians."
"Rev. Shuttlesworth is an Alabama treasure who positively impacted the lives of many Alabamians. Dianne and I extend our deepest sympathies to his family."
Flags will remained lowered until until sunset on the day of Shuttlesworth's interment.
