Westport Road Interchange median project complete

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Detours and lane restrictions are all too familiar to Kentuckiana drivers. Factor in slick streets and a minor fender bender - your commute time could be multiplied.

Residents who live along Westport Road claim landscaping work along the shoulder of the street delayed traffic.

Frances Welsh travels the Westport corridor every day. "Fairly frequently there are backups," she said.

Welsh may not encounter the backups anymore.  Median work is now complete - opening lanes previously constricted along the Westport Road Interchange.

"The drivers have already started to notice a difference," Kelly Downard said, Louisville Metro Council District 16.

For years, the Westport Road Interchange was a sight for sore eyes.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet completed the project in April 2010.  Then, drivers say they experienced unexpected delays during the landscaping phase.

"It's about time. The beautification of it too, is nice," Welsh said.

Dubbed the new gateway to the East End, city leaders invested thousands into sprucing up the green space - designed to welcome overflow traffic.

"It has alleviated a lot of traffic which it was designed to do off the Brownsboro Road interchange," Ken Fleming said, Louisville Metro Council District 7.

"The drivers have already started to notice a difference," Downard said.

Metro council, St. Matthews, Graymoor-Devondale, Windy Hills and Woodlawn Park plan to pay for upkeep and maintenance of the median project.

According to a news release, the improvements are the result of the cooperation of Councilman Ken Fleming, Kelly Downard and Glen Stuckel who secured funding for irrigation in the previous year's budget along with a generous contribution by Hall Contracting which funded the planting materials.

A public-private partnership paid for the landscaping.
