MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Mental Health reports more Alabamians die from suicides than homicides every year.
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, nationally, a person dies by suicide every 15 minutes. It claims more than 34,000 lives each year and is the 10th leading cause of death in the nation.
The ADMH is trying to create an increase in suicide awareness. According to the ADMH, research has shown that education, early intervention and treatment can significantly reduce suicide attempts and deaths.
While some people do not put up red flags, most do show warning signs. Examples of warning signs are:
-Increased alcohol and/or drug use
-Impulsiveness and taking unnecessary risk
-Threatening suicide or expressing a strong wish to die
-Accelerated rage or anger
Help is available by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
