Man found dead near Lake Harding after deadly assault

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - On Sunday a man was found dead in the Lake Harding area of Lee County. The Lee County Sheriff's Office says an alleged dispute between neighbors led to an assault.  According to witnesses, a Valley man and his wife were driving down Lee Road 367 when they saw one of their neighbors, Durward Webster Day, on the side of the road holding a shotgun. Investigators say Day fired a shot into the couple's vehicle.  Day then followed the couple to their home and fired more shots into their car. The Lee County Sheriff's Office says the couple then hit Day with their car.

The coroner pronounced Day dead at the scene. The Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Lee County Coroner's Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences are still investigating.
